Now that the initial release of Banktivity 10.0 is a few months behind us, I want to take a little time to talk about what we’ve been working on since then. And as always, if you want to see all of the fixes and enhancements we’ve made along the way, take a look at our release notes.
Refactoring Banktivity from a document-based app into a library-style app was a significant undertaking. It changed some very fundamental assumptions in the code. Ledgers can now be opened and closed in the background, multiple windows and scenes can be active at once, and the Organizer has to coordinate local files, cloud sync, user accounts and application state in ways the old document architecture never had to.
Banktivity 10.0 laid the foundation for that transition. With Banktivity 10.1, a major focus has been strengthening that foundation. We’ve spent a lot of time simplifying the underlying architecture, eliminating race conditions and threading issues, and improving how ledgers are opened, closed and managed.
That work has paid off in real stability gains: we tracked down race conditions in Portfolio and elsewhere, fixed hangs that could occur while loading account screens, and squashed several crashes involving closing ledgers and editing transactions. These are notoriously hard bugs to reproduce, since they depend on several things going wrong at just the right moment, so we’re especially glad to have run them down.
We’ve also made Banktivity more resilient when it encounters unexpected data. Check Ledger Health can now find and repair additional problems, including orphaned or duplicate sidebar groups and items that somehow ended up in more than one group. We’ve also added protection against malformed category hierarchies that could previously result in a crash. Financial data can live for decades and pass through many versions of an app, so being able to safely identify and repair unusual conditions is something we take seriously.
The Organizer continues to get more polished too. If you only have one ledger, Banktivity will now take you directly into it rather than stopping at the Organizer first. We’ve improved how Banktivity decides which ledger should handle an imported file, improved window restoration, improved sign-in behavior and made a number of changes under the hood to make startup and ledger management more predictable.
10.1 is full of smaller improvements as well: we fixed several issues editing security prices in Portfolio, improved category selection when moving envelope cash, corrected some scheduled transaction issues, fixed importing of balance-forward transactions, and made Banktivity respect your system’s first-day-of-week setting.
Last but not least, we’ve been testing Banktivity 10.1 extensively against Apple’s forthcoming macOS 27, iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 updates. While Apple hasn’t released the final versions yet, Banktivity 10.1 has been working great on the betas, and we expect to be ready when Apple’s updates arrive.
Banktivity 10.0 was a big architectural step for us. Banktivity 10.1 is about making that new foundation stronger, safer and more polished. A lot of the work in this release is the kind we hope you never notice—you just notice that Banktivity feels more solid.
And that’s exactly what we want 10.1 to be.
