Today I’m happy to announce Banktivity 6, coming in Spring 2017.  Banktivity 6 delivers our customers’ most requested features, like Tags and Quick Reports, and introduces some new innovative features like Workspaces. Customers will also love our new Portfolio, Report Groups, and Find features. Banktivity 6 is for macOS Sierra only.

Starting today, anyone buying Banktivity 5 directly from IGG Software will get a free code to unlock Banktivity 6. Existing Banktivity 5 customers can upgrade to Banktivity 6 for $29.99. Regular pricing will be $64.99. All prices in USD. Unfortunately, due to limitations with the Mac App Store, we cannot offer upgrade pricing to customers that want to continue to purchase there.

UPDATE (May 1, 2017): Some of our customers have pointed out that the terms specified above were somewhat vague. To clarify, a free Banktivity 6 code was provided to anyone who purchased the full version of Banktivity 5 during the offer period, which ended with the official release of Banktivity 6 on April 25, 2017. The offer did not apply to upgrades from iBank 4 to Banktivity 5, but purchasing both upgrades (4 to 5 and 5 to 6) results in the same savings as the offer ($59.98 for Banktivity 6 instead of $64.99). We apologize for any confusion resulting from the above phrasing and thank you for your understanding.

Here is the full press release…

IGG SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES NEW VERSION OF PERSONAL FINANCIAL MANAGER, BANKTIVITY 6

PUTNEY, VT, January 24, 2017 – IGG Software today announced a new version of its popular personal financial manager, Banktivity. The new version, Banktivity 6, has been designed from the ground up with customer productivity and enhanced features as the driving goals.

“Banktivity 6 is the biggest release in the history of the product,” said IGG President and founder Ian Gillespie. “The new version brings to the forefront your most important financial information, yet allows an amazing amount of customization so customers can see and organize their finances in a way that is helpful to them.”

Banktivity 6’s new features were driven by customer feedback, new technologies and a quest to provide the most comprehensive and easy to use financial manager for macOS.

Workspaces

Workspaces is a brand new feature that allows customers to put any account, budget, report or other view, side-by-side. This boosts productivity by allowing a customer to see several different parts of their finances next to each other. For example, users can put transactions for an account next to a budget to see how recent spending affects the budget.

“In particular I am struck by the extensive linking capabilities. The charts, the reports, the registers…it seems like everything is connected and available for drilling down or climbing up,” reported a Banktivity 6 beta tester.

The Workspaces feature is the first of its kind in a Mac personal finance software, offering the user an incredible amount of power and flexibility.

Tags

Tags allow users to see and analyze spending habits across categories. Now when a person goes on vacation and spends money on dining out, gas, air fare and hotels they can tag all those transactions as a “vacation.” Then later report on spending just for that vacation. This powerful new feature helps small business owners and individuals easily track any aspect of their income or spending.

Quick Reports

Quick Reports let users dive into their finances quickly and easily. Customers can select transactions and then quickly bring up a report based on the selection. Quick Reports will also allow users to drill down and get more details about their investments or more details on spending. For example, if a customer were wondering how much money was donated to a specific charity last year, a Banktivity 6 Quick Report answers that question with one click. Quick Reports can easily be saved for later with a quick drag to the sidebar.

Find

Find is a new, fast and powerful, document-wide search feature. With Find, customers can search almost any part of any transaction within an entire Banktivity document. The transactions that match the search criteria are grouped by account which keeps them in context.  People can also edit and change transaction right from the Find screen.

Portfolio

Portfolio is a new feature in the sidebar that gives quick access to the performance of investments. Customers can customize it to show investments by account, type or risk factor. While the Portfolio view shows all of the high-level information needed like cost basis, value, gain/loss, security price and IRR, customers can get more detailed information by clicking on a security for a complete analysis of that holding. The new Portfolio features makes tracking the performance of investments effortless.

Additional Improvements

The entire user-interface was overhauled for Banktivity 6 to match the modern experience with macOS Sierra

“When we set out to work on Banktivity 6 we knew we had a great opportunity to redesign it, from the simplest list of transactions to introducing killer new features, like Workspace,” said Gillespie.

Banktivity 6 is the biggest release in the history of the product. Customers will find no pixel left unturned and will be treated to over 100 changes and enhancements, like a new transaction editor with improved keyboard support, new reconciliation process, a new summary view, improved transaction downloads, more flexible budgeting, easier in-app navigation, redesigned reports and more.

“In very simple terms, the app ticks all the boxes (and much more) PLUS with the ability to sync to the cloud, I am never far from my information via the iOS apps,” said J.W. a Banktivity 6 beta tester.

Banktivity also allows you to pay bills from within the app*, schedule transactions, setup budgets, track income, spending and savings rate and much more. Direct Access (purchased separately) and Direct Download allow customers to connect to over 10,000 different banks to download their financial data.

Pricing & Availability

Banktivity 6 will be released in spring of 2017 for $64.99 USD. Customers upgrading from version 5 purchased either directly from IGG Software or the Mac App Store will qualify for upgrade pricing of $29.99 USD. Banktivity 6 requires macOS 10.12 Sierra.

Customers who purchased Banktivity 5 from the IGG Store, after January 23, 2017 until the time of the release of Banktivity 6, will receive a free registration code to unlock Banktivity 6.

  • I AM STILL USING THE OLD IBANK (4?) VERSION OF THE YOUR SOFTWARE. CAN I UPGRADE DIRECTLY TO BANKTIVITY 6 AND SKIP THE 5 VERSION ASSUMING. HOPEFULLY, I CAN IMPORT ALL MY FILES AND DATA DIRECTLY TO 6 FROM IBANK?

  • I like to separate investments by brokerage house. I have done that in reports in version 5 showing IRR % . However in version 6 I do not see anyway to get IRR % for the particular brokerage house in reports.

    • Despite Banktivity 6 being mostly improvements, the loss of functionality regarding IRR calculations is a HUGE issue and a giant step backwards. In Banktivity 5, we could select a subset of accounts and a specific date range to use for IRR calculations in the investment reports. In Banktivity 6 all of that is gone: You can only see overall IRR for ALL accounts for ALL dates and only in Portfolio view. (I could be wrong, but technically it doesn’t even seem like it’s ALL dates, but is the “last 4 years” in my case, even when “last 4 years” is much longer than the account has existed.) I want to get answers to questions like: what was my return for this account or group of accounts for last year, for the last 2 years, for the year two years ago, for last quarter, for the first quarter of last year, etc. It would be good to be able to exclude specific securities from the calculation. None of that is possbile anymore. It is a MAJOR disappointment.

      • Ditto on IRR… and I miss the Top Investment Moves from the Overview (now Summary) page. Now you get a very bland total summary of all investments on the Summary page.

      • CORRECTION: It DOES seem to calculate IRR for each account starting from the earliest transaction in each account. The values don’t quite match Bankitivity 5 values but are generally within 0.1%. Maybe a rounding error in one or the other. It’s still annoying to no longer be able to specify a time period or exclude certain accounts (or securities).

  • It would be nice if several different loan accounts could be grouped into one line item on a budget, rather than listing them as separate line items (making it less clear how much spending goes towards servicing loans). I believe this is not possible as each loan is its own account (rather than a bill within an account, and bills can be grouped into single line items).

  • I have encountered an issue in B6 but noticed that it is also occurring in B5, first time it has happened to me but I have seen earlier references in the blog about resolving this as an enhancement to a future release.

I recently did 2 txns that were correctly downloaded by Direct Access 3-4 days (8th and 13th) ago but today (17th) they keep reappearing (ie doubling up). Can’t seem to be able to merge them and deleting the pair only causes them to come back. Naturally Bank online only has one pair of these txns.

I have taken the account off DA for the moment and I was wondering what process other users follow to overcome this (common ??) issue. First time it has happened to me since I have been using Banktivity for nearly 4 years.

    • I’ve had that happen. I tried everything…… Eventually I just deleted the the txns that were there first and catigorized the new (downloaded) txns and it seems to do the trick. Basically, sticking with the latest downloads helped me but it is still frustrating and not optimal.

      • Thanks Troy.

I tried your tip to leave the latest 2 txns and it has not resolved the issue (other than now it categorizes the new txns. I also tried taking the account out of DA and when I brought it back to DA it duplicated again (categorized) !

May leave it for a few days, we just had a long Easter weekend here (Fri-Mon) and I am wondering how the txns looks at the Bank end (ie in suspense prior to posting may be), shame you can’t merge them and be done (I think that was the gist of an earlier post on this thread).

  • Wanted to bounce a question from other Users to help me understand what looks like a problem in Scheduled Payments (this happens in B5 and B6).

If you change the date on a scheduled transaction it tends to ignore it and jump a whole period, this can be overcome by using CTL Save as documented by IGG in a support article. This command works most of the time in B5, I find if I do many of these changes in the same session it will stop working at some point and the next change will jump a period.

With B6 the CTL Save works very well , probably the first thing I checked in B6 and it has not failed me yet and I have made at least two dozen changes. It also acknowledges you used CTL Save and asks you for verification (nice one !)

But today I changed an amount in a scheduled payment in B6 and the scheduled jumped a period, I was able to use CTL Save to put it back to the correct next payment date. I now can confirm this also happens in B5 though I had never paid attention, ie I noticed the altered payment had jumped a period a few days later and just shrugged my shoulders and re entered the transaction (won’t accept CTL save).

Is that your experience with scheduled payments in B5 ? , ie changing an amount makes the schedule hop a period ?? Also happens in B6 but luckily you are able to change the date back so the damage is minor.

    • I’ve just tried altering the date of an existing, forthcoming scheduled transaction on the scheduled transaction lists of both B5 and B6 and it recorded exactly what I intended, scheduled for the new date I wanted.

I also tried changing the amounts in both B5 and B6 and it accepted them exactly as it should.

Thinking back over the time I have had B5 and B6 I have altered the information contained with the Scheduled Transaction lists many times and never noticed any missing periods.

      Am I missing something here?

      • Thanks Peter, the period hopping occurs for me on transactions that are 3 or 6 months apart (such a tax instalments or stock dividends). They are the ones I change the most as the pay periods are not exactly three or six months apart to the day.

It looks like B6 addresses it nicely and even though the hop occurred for me when I changed an amount on a quarterly bill but I was able to CTL Save it back to the right date.

    • The ‘hoping’ for me was only as a result of a date or period change (eg. months to 2 weeks). This was a constant migraine in B5 until I stumbled upon the CNTL save which reduced it to an intermittent headache. Haven’t tried it in B6 yet….

  • When Banktivity 6 is released, will it enable customisation of Budget periods? (e.g. July-June financial year?). I’ve noted in prior blog comments that this is intended but doesn’t seem to be there yet in the beta version?

    • Yes, you can set the fiscal year. When you do so and look at your budget for the year, it will respect your fiscal year settings.

  • Hey Guys !! Having another brain fart here !!!! Cannot find the place to adjust the number of days ( weeks) to view “scheduled” transactions”….

    Where is that please ?

    Ron

    • Ron

Go to the list of Scheduled Transactions. Find the transaction you want and click on its date. This will give you a pop up to manage the settings for it.

  • How do we get upgrade pricing..the license dialog is not taking my iBank 5 upgrade license
i used when i went from ibank4 to ibank 5??

  • Am disappointed that a crucial apsect of personal accounts software is still missing… Banktivity NEEDS an archiving process that will preserve current reconciled and non-reconciled accounts balances without the need for the user to have to “hack” their various accounts to pieces in order to restore order to the chaos that would be created by simply deleting all transactions up to a specific date. The only published suggestion by an end user on the IGG website is flawed – badly. Although the poster does not state this – his process clearly requires ALL recorded transactions to be deleted in order that starting balances are inserted in each account. That method will screw up the previously neatly organised reconciling process (I reconcile manually from bank statements. Real life is very different – most of us would wish to preserve, for example, the previous 12mths transactions in order that the spending reports etc have any data to operate on. My file has transactions going back 6/7 years – just want to cleanly archive anything beyond 12mths ago.

    • We seriously considered this for Banktivity 6, but ultimately it didn’t make the cut. We can’t implement every feature that every customer wants. We try our best to prioritize and we realize we can’t make everyone happy all the time. Thanks for your continued support!

      • I would like to include a request for this as well. I have a lot of transactions and even having a file longer than a period of a year gets too big and unwieldy. It’s a pain every year to restart the file and have to figure out which transactions overlap.

  • Why do you not include “release notes” when you update the Banktivity? Please include with future releases.

  • I like the interface of the new version but am disappointed that we still don’t have the ability to copy budgets and still have to recreate them from scratch each month.

Also, I have to use the weblink to my bank to download transactions and in the new version every time I navigate from the website page in Banktivity where I can see my bank transactions, it logs me out. This was not true in version 5 and is very frustrating – to have to log back in each time.

  • Color coding of the categories was imperative for me. Looking at just white and slightly grey rows makes it very difficult for me to scroll to where I want to be. Also, the check and double check symbols for reconciled transactions are not as clear as the large green scales… these are surface issues for some, but for me they were the reason I liked Banktivity so much. Hope the colors will come back soon, as I have already begun looking for a new program.

  • Ian – Banktivity looks great and I downloaded the free trial. I have been using Quicken 2007 since . . . well 2007. I am looking for a modern personal software program. My one criticism, (which may keep me from switching over) is the fact that your text is rather large and so I can’t get all my accounts to fit onto one screen. Sounds minor but I prefer to see everything on one page rather than scrolling up and down. The quicken account list and ledger sizes are much smaller than Banktivity. This means I can get more information onto an already large 24 inch screen with Quicken 2017. This is the same issue that kept me from switching to iBank and later versions of Quicken. If you would change this one feature I am sure I as well as many other Quicken 2007 users will switch over too. Thanks!

  • So frustrated with Banktivity 6! I loved 4 and 5 so naturally though upgrading to 6 would be a good step! The color scheme and lay out are terrible. When I am logged into my bank and trying to download transactions, if I go to any other scene (like the account I am trying to compare) I am logged out of my bank! Seriously, this product is so much worse than the 5 version! I am going to have to switch back until they get these issues fixed. Can’t believe I paid more for this downgrade!!!!!

    • The browser does behave differently as does the entire navigation of the app. Use the < (back) button to get back to the website without being logged out or put it in a separate workspace or window. I hope this helps!

  • How do I get rid of the terrible purple color that dominates the program whenever I want to put in a transaction? Is there any way to customize the colors? I am ready to go back to iBank4 just because of this issue. In your manual the color is blue but in my version it is purple.

      • Hi, Can you be a little more specific please. I have gone into all my Mac System Preferences and do not see where I can do this. All of my preferences for appearance in General Preferences are set for Graphite. I see no place for changing the “selection color” for within an application in any of the other System Preferences. Thank you very much in advance.

        • Ok. So I found that if you change the “Highlight color” that the transaction color changes. The strange thing is that if you put it on graphite or any other custom color of grey in “other” in system preferences it turns the Banktivity colors purple or pink. Somewhat strange. But I figured out a solution for now that got rid of the purple. Thank you.
